Autumn (November 22, 1982)

When we met
When your wary innocent life whispered into mine
I listened with half a mind
Drowned in selfish discoveries
Caused our love to falter in its canter
You threw down the reins in disgust
Galloped off onto a fog-shrouded plain

Only then did I comprehend and experience who you were

I called to you
My heart like a priest fearful of banishment to the underworld
Your presence near but unreachable

Now you carve a new entrance into my life
I welcome a stronger you
Your beauty more striking
Your embrace more meaningful
Your hair transformed
Form the log golden equestrian strands
To the flaming red of November leaves in Vermont
drifting voicelessly to the earth.
