Room 33—Introduction to the Mazurka
This section will introduce you to the mazurka which is a Polish dance in 3/4 time. It was very popular in the 19th century and Chopin composed 52 of them. The distinguishing feature which you will hear in the musical example is that the emphasis is on the second beat of the measure, so the feeling is that of 1, 2, 3-1,
2, 3-1, 2, 3.
